On Sept. 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland.  Some units of the Polish army escaped toward Hungary and marched through Gyor.  Leaders of the jewish congregation invited and entertained the jewish officers- some of them high ranking.     ( A photo from the "1989 Reunion Booklet" )
